Silver Star Mountain Resort is thrilled to announce that Sovereign Lake Nordic Club has successfully won the bid to host the 2011 World Masters Cup, a prestigious Nordic event for cross-country racers over 30 years of age.

World Masters Cup delegates met with Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert and councillor Jack Gilroy to tour the area and ski the renowned Nordic trails at Sovereign Lake and Silver Star.

Dieter Heckmann from Switzerland is the president of the World Masters Cross Country Ski Association. He has skied all over the world and was very impressed with the trails and facilities on the mountain and nearby Vernon. “The accommodation at Silver Star is perfect for our event as everyone is within walking distance of the village center,” said Heckmann.

The World Masters Cup will feature participants from more than 25 countries. To qualify, skiers must be 30 years of age or older, and some competitors are in their 80s. The number of participants is huge the recent 2008 World Masters Cup in McCall, ID, had over 1200 competitors from 23 different countries.

Bruce Cummings, chairman of Sovereign Lake, said the club is extremely pleased to be able to showcase the region's Nordic facilities to the world. “We have world class trails connected to world class accommodations at Silver Star Mountain Resort and in Vernon,” said Cummings. “Our volunteers are keen, experienced and very capable of hosting this significant event. Skiers from around the globe will be impressed with everything we have to offer in the North Okanagan.”

“It is very exciting to have the opportunity to host the Nordic World Masters Cup,” said Glenn Bond, Nordic manager at Silver Star Mountain Resort. “Both Silver Star and Sovereign Lake have successfully hosted FIS World Cups in 1991 and 2005. We have proven that we have not only the facilities and amenities, but a large team of skilled, willing and very capable volunteers whose efforts ultimately make these events successful.”

Tom Christensen, Okanagan/Vernon MLA said the winning bid proves that the Vernon area is quickly gaining a reputation for organizing world-class competitions. “Starting with the Nordic World Cup in 2005, building on that with the World Women's Curling Championships in 2008, and now with announcement of the 2011 Nordic Masters World Cup. In each case, Canadians can be proud of how well the North Okanagan has hosted the world,” said Christensen.

If you reside in the Sydney Australia area or find yourself there on a trip, you may want to look up Neil and William. Red Hanky Men is a small personal site about Neil and William. They are into all things associated with Leather, Rubber and especially Fisting. Your site hosts appear a very friendly couple who like to accommodate those who come and play with them. From an extra room to stay in to an extra sling for true orgy-esque scenarios, you could be right at
home with these fellas. As an admirer of older men I can honestly tell you that Neil and William are handsome Daddy types. Healthy and stable, their main picture should disarm you with their huge smiles. I know that if I’m ever down under and want to have my genitals “down under” stimulate, I’ll know where to go. John Farra Named USSA Nordic Director

Published: Fri Mar 21, 2008 2:00 AM MDT

PARK CITY, Utah (March 20) - Olympian John Farra has been named as the new Nordic director for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA). USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt announced Farra's appointment to head the organization's sport programs for cross country, Nordic combined and ski jumping. He will replace Luke Bodensteiner who was recently named as associate athletic director for high performance.

“John brings enthusiasm, excitement and a strong background in Nordic sport at all levels,” said Marolt. “We have made great strides with our Nordic programs in the last decade in bringing our community together nationwide and starting to produce top international results. He will be a great leader to continue those efforts on behalf of our U.S. Nordic athletes.”

“I am thrilled to be back at the USSA at such an exciting time,” said Farra. “Luke and the coaching staff have been running world class professional programs that are creating impressive opportunities for athletes. They are rising to the occasion en route to the 2010 Olympics. And USSA clubs are doing their part to prepare their skiers for high-level competition. It is a splendid time to be a U.S. Nordic fan.”

Farra's background touches on all aspects of athletic participation and sport management. The former U.S. champion was a 1992 Olympic cross country skier and member of the U.S. Ski Team from 1990-93, and was a 1991 NCAA All American at the University of Utah. He graduated from Utah in 1995 and moved into a coaching role. He then served six years in leadership roles at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid.

Since 2002 Farra has worked for the Maine Winter Sports Center, a non-profit economic development corporation based around skiing as a healthy lifestyle, where he served as vice president. His work there included significant development in cross country and biathlon venues in Fort Kent and Presque Isle, as well as other areas. He was responsible for tremendous growth in the organization using the promotion of skiing as a healthy lifestyle activity, especially its Healthy Hometowns program.

His position with USSA will be diverse, overseeing pipeline programs in clubs and regions around the country in cross country, Nordic combined and ski jumping. He will also be responsible for management of elite national teams.

The U.S. Ski Team has begun to make headway internationally. Nordic combined skier Bill Demong won a World Championship silver last year and was third in the World Cup standings this season, a new U.S. mark. Cross country sprinters Kikkan Randall (Anchorage), Andy Newell (Shaftsbury, VT), and Torin Koos (Leavenworth, WA) have been on World Cup podiums, with Randall taking a win this year. And ski jumpers Jessica Jerome (Park City, UT) and Lindsey Van (Park City, UT) are consistently challenging for podiums on the Continental Cup.

“I am genuinely inspired to put my energy and skill to work for today's tremendous U.S. Ski Team athletes and for all those who aspire to join them,” said Farra.

“John brings a deep history with all of our nordic sports, and an expansive skill set developed as an athlete, coach, race official, facility operator and sport administrator,” said Bodensteiner, who has worked with USSA's Nordic programs since 1996. “He's a strong and dynamic leader, an excellent communicator, and he has the international credibility he needs to be effective in the job from day one.

“I will be deeply involved with the transition, and I think this will be nothing but positive for the Nordic community,” Bodensteiner added. “There are still plenty of areas within nordic that we want to build out and improve, and John has the proven ability to build highly effective programs.”

He will join the USSA staff in April and will be an active leader in the organization's annual Athletic Summit planning process and USSA Congress in May. Farra, along with his wife Tess and two children, will move to Park City this spring.

Another interesting gay news blog, My Gay Online brings you the latest political and social updates for us folks who dig members of the same gender. Right now the hot items are the battle between Presidential Candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Their feuds have already made history and no one has even been voted in yet. If you scroll down a bit you’ll see an article about Microsoft’s Pioneer Estate donating $65M to Gay Rights and HIV/AIDS groups. This is just an example of what you can expect on this blog. News isn’t the only thing you’ll find here. If you look to your right you’ll see many resources to peruse. From gay community organizations to dating sites, the list is quite long. Too Cold To Exercise?

Asthma No Comments »

Published: Thu Feb 14, 2008 2:00 AM MST

The full New York Times article can be read here.

The piece focuses on the question of whether it is ever too cold to exercise. John W. Castellani, an exercise physiologist at the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine and lead author of a 2006 position paper from the American College of Sports Medicine on exercising in the cold, provides much of the information in the article. In a nutshell, Dr. Castellani says that the answer is “no” it is never too cold to exercise - while it can most certainly be too hot to exercise.

Of particular interest to competitive skiers is the issue of asthma. Asthma is commonly thought to be exacerbated by extreme cold, and that lungs can be damaged, even frostbit, by the cold.

But, no matter how cold the air is, by the time it reaches your lungs, it is body temperature. And athletically induced asthma is not triggered by the cold - it is the dryness of the air that causes the problems.

Reader Tim Kelley brought up the interesting point that perhaps humidity should be taken into account when determining whether or not it is safe to hold a race. Of course the risk of frostbite is a function of temperature.

One more interesting note is that there is currently no evidence to show that a person can acclimatize to the cold as they can to heat.

Please read the full article before commenting. The above is merely short synopsis of the original piece.

There is talk of the excessive fees for pretty much everything. Want a paper statement? That will be a $2.00 fee. ATM balance inquiry? $0.75. There is also the $4.94 monthly maintenance fee and the $4.64 fee for each reload that is a non-check cashing transaction at a Wal-Mart money card.Comments on the articles have likened Wal-Mart as another evil, fee-happy bank. What they missed is there are no overdraft fees. Overdraft fees account for almost 40% of the fee income for banks and credit unions. From what Ive seen, its the overdraft fees and bounced checks that get customers into trouble in the first place. Wal-Marts MoneyCard helps alleviate that problem.

FIS Doping Panel Sanctions Austrian Cross-Country Skiers

Diet No Comments »

Published: Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:00 AM MST

Updated: Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:33 PM MST

The FIS Doping Panel issued its decisions in the cases of Austrian Cross-Country skiers Roland Diethard, Johannes Eder, and Martin Tauber, who were found to have committed anti-doping rule violations at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino in 2006.

The allegations raised against the athlete Juergen Pinter were dismissed since they were not found to meet the standard of proof required to sanction the athlete according to the FIS Anti-Doping Rules. However, the Panel reserves the right to re-consider this case in the event the continuing investigations regarding the blood residues found in the tubing used by the athlete in the course of injecting Thiagamma confirm that the needles and tubing found in his possession were used for the purpose of withdrawing or injecting blood.

In April 2006, the IOC Executive Board disqualified the above athletes from the events in which they competed at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino and declared the athletes permanently ineligible for all future Olympic Games in any capacity. Additionally, the IOC transferred the files to the International Ski Federation (FIS) to consider whether it should take any further action within its own competence.

The hearings of the four athletes by the FIS Doping Panel took place on the September 17-18, 2007. Following the hearings and a thorough review of the cases, the FIS Doping Panel has found that Roland Diethard, Johannes Eder and Martin Tauber committed violations against the FIS Anti-Doping Rules. These athletes have been suspended according to the provisions of the FIS Anti-Doping Rules for two years, commencing from the date of the decisions, namely from 22nd November 2007 until 21st November 2009. All results achieved by the athletes in competition since February 18th, 2006 are disqualified and all medals, points and prizes received in such competition are forfeited.

The FIS Doping Panel found that Roland Diethard and Martin Tauber committed an anti-doping rule violation contrary to Article 2.6 of the FIS Anti-Doping Rules (Possession of Prohibited Substances and Methods). In the case of Johannes Eder, the FIS Doping Panel found that the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation contrary to Article 2.2 (Use or Attempted Use of a Prohibited Substance or Method) and Article 2.6 (Possession of Prohibited Substances and Methods) of the FIS Anti-Doping Rules.

The decisions of the FIS Doping Panel may be appealed within 21 days to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The proceedings by the International Ski Federation related to these cases are independent of the proceedings by the International Olympic Committee. Appeals by all four athletes against the decisions of the IOC Executive Board are currently in review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). For more information, please visit www.tas-cas.org. Decisions of the CAS are final and cannot be appealed.

Regarding the decision of the IOC Executive Board dated 24th May 2007 relating to the Austrian Olympic Committee and its officials at the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, the proceedings of the FIS Doping Panel are still underway.
